How to describe OBJECTIVELY when recording observations of children. Notice below examples that describe actions in detail without offering opinion, judgment or interpretation of the child’s intentions or inner thoughts. DO WRITE: Roberto used a blue crayon on the white paper and covered about half of it with blue. AVOID: Roberto likes the color blue because his paper was almost all covered with that color. DO WRITE: Roberto looked toward his teacher and said: “Look! I’m jumping” AVOID: Roberto was proud of his jumping when he told his teacher to look at him. DO WRITE: Roberto frowned, shouting at the child next to him: “That’s my car.” AVOID: Roberto was mad because another child took his car. DO WRITE: Marlena groaned while working on the puzzle, turning the piece she held in her hand one way, then another. When the piece did not fit she threw it on the floor. AVOID: Marlena was becoming very frustrated. When she couldn’t get the puzzle pieces to fit she gave up and threw the pieces on the floor.
